Today's prompt is a story starter in keeping with the theme of superstitions or Halloween. Write a short story that starts with or includes this paragraph:
The overcast day chased me under the throw on the sofa where I sat with my laptop and a hot mug of coffee. I settled in; the heat from the laptop warming my legs. A blur of movement drew my attention to the sheers at the deck doors. A black cat peered into the house with darting golden eyes. I stopped and stared. A black cat...

Last night saw me at The Dollar Store picking through leftover bags of trick or treat candies. Because I had envisioned beforehand which candy, lollipops and gum I would want, were I a child on a Halloween mission, I located all but one of the treats I wanted. There were no more Reece's cups. Those had been my late Mother's favorite.
Twelve large bags later, I stowed them into the truck of my VW Beetle and headed home. Since it was after ten o'clock there wasn't much traffic and the whoosh of the tires over the chilled asphalt felt soothing to my frayed nerves. My day at the office had been very involved and I was ready to have my day off tomorrow.
It only took fifteen minutes to drive to my home and armed with my goodies, I juggled the plastic bags, my briefcase and managed to extricate the keys from my pocket. Why in the world had I dropped them in my pocket when I knew I must have them in order to unlock the front door? I asked aloud.
Once in the house. I unceremoniously dropped the packages onto the bench in the foyer. Time for bed.
The next morning was damp and gray. A black cat ... and it was Halloween!
I hadn't seen this feline before and she looked sleek and lean. Wondering if she was lost I quickly put my coffee and laptop on the end table. Rising I walked to the sliding door and seeing that the cat was still on the deck, I opened the slider quietly. She seemed unperturbed, relaxed and decided to saunter my way to rub herself against my bare feet.
"Hello there beautiful," I greeted her. Trilling sweetly, she looked up into my eyes and must have approved of what she saw there, because the next thing I knew ...
Theresa! Great job incorporating the story starter. It left me wondering what will happen with the cat. After all Halloween and black cats! I love to see the way the prompts here at Pumping Your Muse Prompts excavate nuggets that can grow into something precious or something sinister... Good job.
