Just to add to my earlier comment, any fantasy writing I do is in the form of the middle ages, thus, the thatch houses. Though, I'm still debating whether I should make my protagonist from the "good" point of view, or the "bad" point of view...or maybe even both!

As for your second comment about POV, it is really the question of whether your lead character is good or bad. Sounds like he/she might be a reluctant hero with flaws perhaps. No character should be all good or all bad or they are not believable. Giving them some of both makes them a character that readers can relate to.

I enjoy this opening, although if I use it, I think I will modify it just a bit. Maybe something like-
Howling wind cut through the mountain pass and poured into the village, rattling the thatch houses within.
